Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: My student is interested, but they don’t have any experience with product design/startups. Can they still participate?
A: Yes! No prior experience is necessary. All we ask is that students are excited to learn and come with a positive attitude and that they are proficient in English.

Q: My student wants to come to the camp, but they are nervous about public speaking and/or working in a group. Is that okay?
A: Yes; this camp is a great opportunity to learn public speaking skills. We will have a workshop on public speaking skills & presentations to prepare the students for the competition on the final day. There will also be an instructor working with each group to ensure that they stay on track and to guide them through the process.

Q: Do parents get to attend the final presentations?
A: Yes! On Day 5, we invite all family/friends to come watch and support your student’s presentation.

Q: What business skills will the camp work on?
A: We will work on entrepreneurship, technology, marketing, finance, and much more.

Q: What is DECA?
A: DECA is an international organization of school clubs that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management in high schools and colleges around the globe. In addition, DECA provides the opportunity for students to compete at regional, state, and international levels. In Carlmont DECA’s first six years, we have had 43 qualifiers for international competition.

Q: Who are the instructors?
A: The camp is led by Carlmont DECA members. They have all been trained to teach the students wireframing, spreadsheet skills, and how to create & pitch a startup business plan. In addition, our Carlmont DECA advisor, John Rowe, will also be at the camp.

Q: Are there financial aid opportunities?
A: Yes! Please contact us directly at jrowe@seq.org for more details. If you have any other questions, please contact jrowe@seq.org. We will be sending out more updates soon.
